Breaking Up…Fights

choice compassion conscientious-ness control friends Joan Winifred justice leadership logic parenting peace Proverbs safety wisdom

Does pursuing peace mean breaking up fights?? Or getting involved in fights (i.e. political, controversial or other)?

Which fights? Who defines “fight” ? A “cause”  and/or causes worthy of battle/engagement/time/energy/life/interference?!…carnal, psychological, mental, emotional, spiritual, physical…war?

I am no one to beep!…meaning i VERY rarely use my car horn, and any usage is quite judiciously at that. Perhaps, it’s been YEARS (?)..since, well, other than on this past Tuesday afternoon. Today is Thursday, November 1st.

What would You do?…IF…

you’re peacefully, (semi-quietly) alone for approximately 10 minutes (waiting/sitting/meditating/listening to Vivaldi) in your car at the corner of Street X and Street Y–a couple feet before stop sign in the shade–with left-side view of Main Z Street…first come the bikers…aka middle school kids w/stuffed back packs just let out of school-jail wildly racing homeward down popular/well-traveled side-street used by some to get home faster by avoiding Main Z Street traffic.

The usual pattern routine…first come bikers, loners, then first set of walkers, then next wave of walkers including my daughter and her friend…whom i transport home most afternoons. This Tuesday was different. After bikers…i hear a ROAR of a crowd…thought, wow, kids are much more noisier today, eh?

Looked up and to the left…yep, two boys (surrounded/encircled by big bunch of onlookers) going at it…fighting…fisticuffs!! They are simultaneously trying to rip each other’s t-shirts off…(pourquoi? who knows?) the fight has moved into the middle of Street Y…looks like a huge curious crowd of cockroaches has swarmed. Approximately 40-50 kids; mostly in the street and some on both sidewalks.Within seconds more kids are joining in…and the spectator swarm swells.

I eye my daughter and her friend stopped on side-walk checking out the fight. Immediately beep 2-3 short beeps to get her attention to no avail! At that moment, i notice one prevailing-fighter kid looking like he’s trying his best to pound/smash the non-prevailing kid’s head to the concrete.

Uh-OH…head injuries can be serious/fatal…stupid? kids. Immediately and instinctually, i calmly drive toward crowd in middle of street laying l-o-n-g on my extra LOUD horn without any let-up!!  They one and all–at once–disperse and disengage including fighting boys. They take off running and scattering to sidewalks and begin leaving the scene. I roll down my window and assertively/firmly tell my daughter to get in! now.

She calls to her friend to get in our car…as i hear another friend cheering and yelling, “A.’s Mom to the Rescue!”:)

My daughter’s friend is smiling and they (my daughter and friend) laughingly cannot believe I just broke up the fight…with a beep. I didn’t get involved in the fight; which was not my fight; didn’t personally yell at the kids nor pick sides yet handled the situation…before it got too too out of hand…and with the long beep/loud horn strategy managed getting about 50 kids to leave scene and go home before anyone got seriously injured.

Hope they all made it home okay. Hope the fighting is finished.

It came naturally—didn’t think twice—about the horn or driving carefully straight toward crowd in middle of road nor not leaving my vehicle. Before responsible-mature-logical adult action–I had a quick/passing thought about calling police. But by the time they would arrive, fighting kid(s) probably would be quite hurt and all of the kids in needless trouble. It just seemed like involving the authorities would make matters worse. And before those thoughts quickly left my mind–I was already driving and laying on horn. The road easily cleared. We safely road down Street Y…cause

Like someone grabbing hold of a dog’s ears

Is the one passing by who becomes furious about*(or who possibly meddles in) a quarrel that is not his.  PROverb 26:17

Interesting commentary (for Youths & Adults alike) on this intriguingly-wise Biblical Proverb:

What would happen if you grabbed hold of the ears of a dog? It would hurt the dog, and he would snap at you, wouldn’t he? The more the dog tried to get loose, the harder you would have to hold on to the ears and the more excited the dog would get. If you let him go, he would probably bite you hard. But can you just stand there and hold his ears forever?—

Well, that is the kind of trouble that we would be in if we got mixed up in a fight between other people. We may not know who started the fight or why they are fighting. One person may be getting beaten up, but perhaps he stole something from the other one. If we helped him, we would be helping a thief. That would not be good, would it?

So, what should you do if you see a fight?— If it is at school, you can run and tell a teacher. And if it is away from school, you can call one of your parents or a policeman. Yes, even when other people want to fight, we should be peaceable. [Is It Right to Fight? Learn From the Great Teacher, Chapter 19, p. 106]

my daily intention: pursue peace with all people (younger & older)…while remaining politically neutral at all times.

The Unscientific Mind

appreciation conscientious-ness Joan Winifred logic science & spirituality Truth universe wisdom

Visibility = scientific?! = Evidence??

Invisibility = unscientific?! = No evidence??

(What!? am i talking about? Some context.)

Description of this post: (a/my goofy writing of) sarcastic/snarky view of : visibility v. invisibility (flawed logic/reasoning “apparent” therein).

I cannot see gravity (per se) so it doesn’t exist –I skydive without a parachute, oh, how i love to walk without broken bones!

I cannot see electricity (per se) so it doesn’t exist–I hand wash all my clothes, and never eat toast and my communication limited?…most of all hate talking face to person.

What’s a microwave?? I don’t worry about radiation: I eat cold food and drink lukewarm tea most days.

Air? what’s that?…am turning blue and purple?? well, my lungs cannot be breathing oxygen, correct?

‘Are there some things that we cannot see with our eyes but that we believe exist because there are sound reasons to do so? What about the air we breathe? We may feel it when there is a breeze. We can tell that it fills our lungs, even though we do not see it. Because we see the effects, there is good reason to believe in it, isn’t that so?’ (2) ‘And we cannot see gravityBut when we drop something we see evidence that gravity is at work. Nor do we see odors, but our nose picks them up. We cannot see sound waves, but our ears detect them. So we believe in things we cannot see—provided there is good reason to do so, isn’t that right?’  [excerpted reading: Reasoning from the Scriptures: God]

Illustration: When we see a camera, a radio, or a computer, we readily acknowledge that it must have been produced by an intelligent designer. Would it be reasonable, then, to say that far more complex things—the eye, the ear, and the human brain—did not originate with an intelligent Designer? [rs p. 147: God]

0h, i’m being unscientific?!..cause I BELIEVE IN A GOD I CANNOT SEE!🙂

i’ve read (visible) books by (invisible) authors i’ve never met…yet…

Planet Earth: When crossing a barren desert, if you came to a beautiful house, well equipped in every way and stocked with food, would you believe that it got there by some chance explosion? No; you would realize that someone with considerable wisdom built it. Well, scientists have not yet found life on any of the planets of our solar system except the earth; available evidence indicates that the others are barren. This planet is, as the book The Earth says, “the wonder of the universe, a unique sphere.” (New York, 1963, Arthur Beiser, p. 10) It is at just the right distance from the sun for human life, and it moves at just the right speed to be held in orbit. The atmosphere, of a kind found only around the earth, is made up of just the right proportion of gases to sustain life. Marvelously, light from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air, and water and minerals from fertile soil combine to produce food for earth’s inhabitants. Did it all come about as a result of some uncontrolled explosion in space? Science News admits: “It seems as if such particular and precise conditions could hardly have arisen at random.” (August 24 and 31, 1974, p. 124) The Bible’s conclusion is reasonable when it states: “Of course, every house is constructed by someone, but he that constructed all things is God.”—Heb. 3:4.

men and women (myself included) write all these books, blogs, etc. to argue/prove/elevate our limited-imperfect-perspective-points (of view)… fictions? about trivialities.

May be? we need to take a break from reading fiction, and thoroughly examine/

Look at the living literature!…the “Book of Nature” …our planet, our universe, our bodies…speaking perfect, limitless volumes of Truth/evidence…albeit difficult to translate/analyze by arrogance.

reformation(s)…removing varnish..and tarnish?!

Halloween’s roots, although not found in the Bible, can be traced back to a pagan origin. The pre-Christian Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all celebrated a festival for the dead. These ancients believed that on these occasions the spirits of the dead returned; therefore food was left for them and lamps were kept burning so they would not lose their way.

The Celtic order of Druids worshiped Samhain, lord of the dead, as well as a sun-god to whom the horse was sacred. On November 1, which was also their New Year, they held a joint festival in honor of these gods. It was believed that the souls of those who had died the previous year because of their sins were confined to the bodies of lower animals, and at the time of this festival Samhain assembled them together, and they were released to go to the Druid heaven. On the eve of the feast of Samhain the pagan Celts used to keep bonfires burning, believing that this would protect them from evil spirits.

The many features of today’s Halloween and Day of the Dead celebrations can be traced directly back to paganism. The ancients associated this time of the year with the supernatural and with the thronging of dead spirits, so it was right in line with Catholic church policy to adopt this date for their All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day. The people were thus able to keep their pagan customs and beliefs and still celebrate what are called Christian festivals of the highest rank. But the varnish applied by Christendom to these pagan feasts is so thin that there is no questioning the fact that Halloween is rooted in paganism.

It is interesting to note that the Protestant Reformation was touched off on Halloween night. How so? Martin Luther, knowing it was the custom of the people to flock to the Palace Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on the eve of All Saints, picked that night to nail his ninety-five theses to its door. On reading them, the people’s smoldering resentment against the Catholic church burst into flames. Many pagan practices were cast off by the reformers, the celebration of All hallows Eve being one of them. [excerpted reading: w 11/1/1960 What Does Halloween Mean to You?]

my heart:

Whoever trusts in his own heart is stupid.—Prov. 28:26.

read commentary:
A popular philosophy or common adage is: Follow your heart. But doing that can be dangerous. And in a sense, doing so is unscriptural. The Bible warns us not to let our imperfect heart or mere sentiment rule when we are making decisions. And Bible accounts show the sad consequences of following one’s heart. The core problem is that in imperfect humans, “the heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate.” (Jer. 3:17; 13:10; 17:9; 1 Ki. 11:9) So, what could it mean for us if we simply follow our heart and let our emotions dictate our thinking and actions? For example, what might happen if we make decisions when we are angry? The answer may be obvious if we have done this in times past. (Prov. 14:17; 29:22) Or is it likely that we will make sound decisions when we are discouraged? (Num. 32:6-12; Prov. 24:10) [excerpted reading: w 17.03 2:12, 13]
