A Greek word…
“Re-Creation” Or “regeneration; renewal.” The Greek word pa·lin·ge·ne·siʹa is composed of elements that mean “again; anew; once more” and “birth; origin.” The ancient Jewish writer Philo used the term with reference to the renewal of the world after the Flood; Jewish historian Josephus used it regarding the reestablishment of Israel after the exile. Here in Matthew’s account, it refers to the time when the rule of Christ and his corulers will bring to the earth a renewal of the perfect conditions enjoyed by the first humans before they sinned. Matthew 19:28: “Jesus said to them: “Truly I say to you, in the re-creation, when the Son of man sits down on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will sit on 12 thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel.”
Those “called to be holy ones” are said to judge, not themselves, but “the world.” (1 Co 1:1,2; 6:2 “Or do you not know that the holy ones will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you not competent to try very trivial matters?”) Those reigning with Christ form a kingdom of priests. (1 Peter 2:9 “But you are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for special possession, that you should declare abroad the excellencies” of the One who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” Revelation 5:10 “and you made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they are to rule as kings over the earth.”) Consequently, “the twelve tribes of Israel” mentioned at Matthew 19:28 and Luke 22:30 “so that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom, and sit on thrones to judge the 12 tribes of Israel” evidently represent “the world” of mankind who are outside that royal priestly class and whom those sitting on heavenly thrones will judge.—Revelation 20:4 “And I saw thrones, and those who sat on them were given authority to judge. Yes, I saw the souls of those executed for the witness they gave about Jesus and for speaking about God, and those who had not worshipped the wild beast or its image and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand. And they came to life and ruled as kings with the Christ for 1,000 years.” [excerpted reading: “Tribe” Insight, Vol. 2]
A comparative study of Bible translations is useful; particularly for those of us not fluent/proficient enough in Hebrew, Aramaic, Koine, Old English, Middle English, Early-Modern English. New World Translation Revised Version 2013 is my favorite for many reasons… as well as the study edition! I’ve found it to be trustworthy…
I like this word “palingenesia”…find it to be hopeful. The human family and our home/Earth need renewal/healing…compassionate justice.:)
Let’s humbly & courageously face the facts people aka acknowledge our human historical record FULL of undeniable evidence of human’s inability to unselfishly rule other humans successfully long-term and sans violence and destruction and ruination of the planet… every form of human self-government has been a failure!!…(including democracy)…true theocracy is our only hope for compassionate justice!!
